Suite of four Louis XVI period ‘à la reine’ armchairs
Stamped on the four by Pierre Bernard (1730-1788), Master in 1766
Grey lacquered moulded and carved beech. The backrest is canted and decorated with rais de coeur motifs. The armrests end in acanthus leaves and sit on supports decorated with a frieze of piastres, curved belt decorated with a frieze of curved flutes, standing on fluted and curved tapered legs

This is a very unusual cut-back design. It can be found on another pair of armchairs by the same Pierre Bernard in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (MAD Inv.7960).
