Large pair of Louis XIV period porte-torcheres
Carved and gilded wood
Circa 1700
H 161 cm L 56 cm D 40 cm
This model has some truly original features. Indeed, the tripod legs are scroll-shaped and curve outwards, whereas the majority of Louis XIV-era models have scrolls that curve inwards. A pair of similar torch-style door frames with inwards-curving legs is held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv. BK-NM-14302-A and B), whilst another pair in the same style is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. 07.225. 190a-b), whilst another pair is held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (inv. 4325A).
