Pair of Louis XIV period andirons depicting Venus and Vulcan

Chiselled and gilded bronze

The two mythological figures seated opposite each other rest on sarcophagus pedestals with bases formed by four dragons. 

Paris, Circa 1710-1720

Dimensions : H 40 cm L 23,5 cm P 18 cm

This beautiful pair of andirons can be compared to another pair decorated with the same figures, acquired around 1725 by Margrave Carl Wilhelm Friedrich for the Margrave's mirror cabinet at Ansbach Castle, or to an identical pair kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (No. 2004.137.1.2).
