Rouge Griotte marble was one the favorite marbles of King Louis XIV, who in 1692 decreed his quarries exploitation "royal quarries". He ordered many fireplaces for the royal apartments of the Palace of versailles, which have the distinction of presenting few ornaments of gilded bronze to emphasize the beauty of the stone. (See for example the fireplace of the office of King Louis XIV).
