Pair of large Louis XV sconces attributed to Jacques Caffieri (1678-1755)

Circa 1750

Chased and gilded bronze

Three arms of light rise from the centre, two of which are at the same height on either side, and are formed of moving foliage scrolls adorned with flowers. Asymmetrical spindles and bells. On a shaft with asymmetrical foliage and cascades of flowers.

H 61 cm L 49 cm

Of exceptional quality in both the chasing and the gilding, these sconces are a perfect example of the great mastery of Jacques Caffieri's workshop. They are similar to a pair purchased from the master bronzemaker for Louis XV's eldest daughter, the Infanta Louise Elisabeth, wife of the Duke of Parma, for their Colorno castle, and now kept in the Palazzo del Quirinale in Rome.
